Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for “The Answer”) is a South African rap-rave group formed in Cape Town in 2008. The group’s members are rappers Ninja and Yolandi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek. Their image involves a counterculture movement called zef (South African slang for “common”).

They shot to global fame with the release of 2009’s “Enter The Ninja”. The song, and their subsequent fame, had journalists and fans everywhere asking if the project is a joke, or a serious musical act. Ninja responded:

Ninja is, how can I say, like Superman is to Clark Kent. The only difference is I don’t take off this fokken Superman suit.

Die Antwoord have described their blurring of the line between art and reality as “documentary fiction” and “exaggerated experience” designed for shock value.
