About Desaparecidos

Desaparecidos is an Omaha, NE based band, lead by frontman Conor Oberst.

The band’s name is the Spanish word for The Disappeared, referencing those who were illegally imprisoned or murdered during the Right-Wing dictatorships of South America’s Southern Cone beginning in the mid-1970’s under the U.S. funded and coordinated Operation Condor.

The band’s lyrics tackle everything from political and social injustice, hyper-consumerism,-commercialism, and capitalism in the U.S, and rigid-gender norms and their relation to capitalism.

The band was formed in 2001 after Bright Eyes frontman Oberst expressed interest in creating music influenced by 90’s post-hardcore and emo music. Releasing their first album, Read Music / Speak Spanish in 2002, the band toured with bands like Jimmy Eat World and The Promise Ring. However, they embarked on a hiatus from 2002 to 2010 so Oberst could pursue his growing solo career with Bright Eyes.

In 2010, they began touring and recording again.
