Departure entered the world of plunderphonics production with his debut effort, Departure (2021) at just 13, inspired by the likes of Nujabes and J Dilla, proving to be his biggest inspirations. Shortly afterwards he formed the duo Homebound Kid with Butterfly Boy.
Departure’s releases in 2022 after the release of Homebound Kid’s debut effort Not So World Famous (2021) would prove to be different every time, releasing 4 new albums — most notably Personal Therapy of Foreign Affair, from False Acquaintances and Ibiza Dreams (2022), which take inspirations from glitch music and sound collage respectively.
After 2022, Departure changed directions and began rapping, and his 5th effort Composition solidifed the change. Featuring underground acts like Jonny Farias & Hoodie Hilltop, he solidified his role in underground rap and later released the collab effort I Can’t Wait for the Day I miss Who I Am Right Now with fellow Texan rapper Young Hachi, and the abstract EP Suprematism to close the year.
In 2024, Departure released his seventh album VVS, a folktronica & plunderphonics-based work, to near critical and universal acclaim. With the Color field mixtape and his eighth studio album Braille Brandishing (2025), he continues his foray into defining himself as a lyrically dense abstract rapper.
