David Mallett attended the University of Maine to study acting. It was there that he discovered the music of well-known singer-songwriters Gordon Lightfoot and Bob Dylan and began writing his own songs.
While building his budding career playing cover songs, Mallet would include some of his original songs in his sets. By the time he reached his mid-twenties, he was exclusively singing his own songs.
In 1975, Mallett learned that Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul and Mary had opened a recording studio in Maine and contacted Stookey to request a visit. That led to Stookey mentoring Mallett and eventually producing Mallett’s first three albums, as well as getting Mallet’s “The Garden Song” included on Pete Seeger’s 1979 album, Circles And Seasons. John Denver would also make a top-ten recording of the song.
In the late 80s, Mallett moved to Nashville, recorded three records and wrote songs recorded by Marty Stuart, Hal Ketchum, Emmylou Harris, Kathy Mattea, Alison Krauss and others.
Since returning to Maine in 1995, Mallett has recorded seven additional albums, culminating with Celebration in 2016. David continues touring with The Mallet Brothers Band.
