David “Dave” Gahan (born David Callcott; 9 May 1962) is an English singer-songwriter, best known as the baritone lead singer for the electronic music band Depeche Mode since their debut in 1980. He is also an accomplished solo artist, releasing albums in 2003 (Paper Monsters) and 2007 (Hourglass). Though his bandmate Martin L. Gore continues to be the main Depeche Mode songwriter, Gahan has also contributed a number of songs to the band’s most recent albums. Withing his side-project with Soulsavers Gahan has released two albums: The Light the Dead See (2012) and Angels & Ghosts (2015).
Dave has no formal academic background in music, yet is unbelievably talented and masterful at what he does. Gahan’s parents made him go to church when he was little, and the eventual Depeche Mode frontman didn’t like it much. But hey, he thinks the gospel music helped a little bit. “One thing I really loved about it was the music. And I was forced to sing. Maybe that’s where I got my chops… I think there’s always been a spiritual sense to Depeche Mode’s music.”
Q magazine ranked Gahan no. 73 on the list of the “100 Greatest Singers” and no. 27 on “The 100 Greatest Frontmen”.
