Dark Funeral is a black metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. The band was founded by guitarists David “Blackmoon” Parland and Mikael “Lord Ahriman” Svanberg in 1993, during the second wave of black metal. They later recruited vocalist/bassist Paul “Themgoroth” Mäkitalo and drummer Joel “Draugen” Andersson.
In May of 1994 the band released their first EP, and later that same day played their first live show in Oslo, Norway. Their first album, The Secrets of the Black Arts, was released in January of 1996, already with a different drummer Peter “Equimanthorn” Eklund.
Through many lineup changes the band has continued to release new albums and play live shows. The only constant founding member of Dark Funeral is Lord Ahriman.
The band’s lyrical themes include anti-Christianity and Satanism, which is also supported by their overall image and artworks. Several members of the band have confirmed their anti-Christian views in interviews and on social media.
