Daphne & Celeste are an American pop duo, formed in New Jersey in the late ‘90s. Their debut single, “Ooh Stick You!”, was released in late 1999 and became an international hit, giving them a top 10 hit in the UK, Scotland, and New Zealand. Their follow-up single, “U.G.L.Y.,” likewise gave the duo a top 20 hit in each country. Both singles centered on rapid-fire delivery of insults in high-pitched voices.
Their debut album, We Didn’t Say That!, was released in 2000. Critical reaction to the duo was decidedly mixed, with some critics commending the group’s lack of seriousness, but others criticizing their lyrics and vocals.
The group had vanished from the public eye by the end of 2000, but they mounted an unexpected comeback in 2015 with a new single, “You & I Alone,” followed by their sophomore LP, Daphne & Celeste Save the World, three years later. The album, which adopted a more alternative sound than their debut, won acclaim and spawned further singles “BB” and “Alarms.”
