Born Seymour Kaufman to a Jewish family in New York, Cy Coleman (1929-2004) showed early talent for classical and jazz music, but opted to write popular hits for Frank Sinatra such as “Witchcraft” and “The Best Is Yet to Come.” He later went into Broadway, winning five Tony Awards for such musicals as The Will Rogers Follies and City of Angels.
