CRWN is the hip-hop/electronica/producer outfit of King Puentespina. A member of the LOGICLUB collective, he has collaborated with different artists such as Curtismith, Jess Connelly, BP Valenzuela throughout his career.
CRWN wasn’t pegged to be an integral part of King’s musical career early on. He started the persona circa 2013 as a bedroom project, one that would be overshadowed at the time by his focus as the drummer of rock band, She’s Only Sixteen.
But with the release of Under Blankets in November 16, 2014, a collaborative track with then-unknown R&B singer, Jess Connelly, CRWN would put himself on the indie map, as his SoundCloud views rocketed to 100k views in just five months.
His approach to production and music can be summarized in this opening paragraph from an interview article in 2015:
CRWN is a clever act, and not just because the moniker is a playful riff on King Puentespina’s name. Combining the sounds of old soul and traditional jazz with modern sensibilities, CRWN manages to tap into two emotional charges: the sense that you’re living in the urban present, and the unshakable feeling of a musical memory being brought back to fresh realization, a memory of how music was like before any of us millennials were even born.
