Cody Matthew Johnson is a multi-media composer, music producer, sound designer, and multi-instrumentalist (known for Devil May Cry 5, Claws, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite) whose irreverent, unapologetic, and fresh perspective on music eclipses the boundaries of conventional media music.
Prior to his move to Los Angeles, Johnson was raised on the coasts of Lake Erie in Northern Pennsylvania where he developed his affinity toward performing classical, jazz, and theatrical music as a brass musician. After a near-fatal accident as a teenager, Johnson’s injuries damaged many of his musical faculties. Cody used this as an opportunity to expand his musical palette beyond orchestral and jazz to electronic music production and sound design. His affinities eventually pulled him to Los Angeles where he studied composition and sound design at Musician’s Institute. Before graduating top of his class with a Bachelor of Music in Composition Scoring for Visual Media from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California, he began to work alongside critically acclaimed composer Jeff Rona on a myriad of television shows, feature films, documentaries, and video games.
Cody went on to manage Wide Blue Sky, the film music studio of Jeff Rona and has since worked alongside Rona composing additional music and producing the hip-hop Florida-noir driven score for TNT’s top rated show Claws (2017-2019), crossover jazz fusion electro-noir music for Sony’s PSN debut series Powers (2015-2016), and a wide variety of feature films and documentaries.
Finding his home in video game music, Cody’s most recent contribution was for Capcom’s highly anticipated and long awaited sequel Devil May Cry 5 (2019). Johnson first caught Capcom’s attention with his remixes of classic Capcom character theme songs for the Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite (2017), including remixing Dante’s theme from elements of “Devils Never Cry”. Ultimately, it was Johnson’s modern production techniques and experience with heavier metal, industrial, and electronic genres that led him to compose, produce Dante’s new full immersive and interactive theme “Subhuman (feat. Suicide Silence)” for Devil May Cry 5 (2019) in collaboration with death core band and genre founders Suicide Silence.
Additionally, Johnson writes and produces music for recording artists and internationally distributed publishing and trailer companies from his studio in Glendale, California.
