Coast Contra is a Los Angeles based rap collective that formed when it’s members Rio Loz, twin brothers Ras and Taj Austin and Eric Jamal met each other living in the 505 Apartments of LA.
Ras and Taj Austin, sons of West Coast rap legend Ras Kass and soul songstress Teedra Moses, met Colombian-born Rio Loz in high school to assemble Coast Contra. After releasing their first mixtape The Coast Contra Tape Volume 1 the trio later found its fourth member Eric Jamal, a bubbling rapper out of North Philadelphia, PA who had recently moved into the 505 Apartments.
Coast Contra’s first official single “Queen & Slim” featuring BJ the Chicago Kid is the title track from the blockbuster movie with the same name, released by Motown Records in November 2019. Their follow-up single “Legacy” jump-started Coast Contra’s musical takeover in 2020.
Since then the group has been dropping freestyles over beats used by hip hop legends including Nas, Mobb Deep and Big L among others. Their most popular freestyle as of July 2022 is over Dreamville artist JID’s “NEVER” from his debut studio album in 2017, The Never Story. On March 24, 2022 Coast Contra released their debut studio album Apt. 505 named after the place the collective met and came together as a group.
