Much of the music of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) has been lost, but he still exercised great influence in secular music, sacred music, and opera. Born in Cremona, he started his career in the court of Mantua and then served as the chapel master at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. While his funeral was a huge affair, his music was quickly forgotten after his death and only revived in the 20th century, as he was hailed as a transitional figure between Renaissance and Baroque musical styles.
