Clannad (originally Clann as Dóbhair or “The Family from Dore”) formed in 1970 in Gweedore, Ireland after performing casually at their family’s pub. They were comprised of siblings Máire, Pól, and Ciarán Brennan, and their twin uncles Noel and Pádraig Duggan (Pádraig died in August 2016).
Clannad began by performing traditional Irish folk songs and Irish music of their own creation and quickly gained a loyal following. In the early ‘80’s, they began to expand their sound, fusing traditional Irish sounds with new-age, creating the entirely new genre of 'Celtic music’. At the same time, younger sister Eithne, who had been performing with Clannad for about 3 years, left to pursue a solo career under the name Enya.
Celtic music was the springboard from popular regional act to international stardom. In the intervening years, they have had 8 top-10 albums in the UK, won BAFTA, Grammy and Billboard Music awards, spun off the successful solo career of Máire (under the name Moya, though she continues to perform with Clannad) and scored several popular movies and TV shows.
