The post-hardcore band Chiodos (chee-oh-dose) hails from Davidson, MI and formed in 2001, originally as “The Chiodos Bros.”
The band’s name derives from the filmmakers/special effects artists of the same name – Stephen, Edward, and Charles Chiodo, most famous for their 1988 sci-fi horror comedy Killer Klowns From Outer Space.
After three EPs, Chiodos signed with Equal Vision Records and hit the scene with their debut studio album, All’s Well That Ends Well, in the summer of 2005, which peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Top Heatseekers. In September of 2007, the band released their follow-up, Bone Palace Ballet, named after the eccentric poet Charles Bukowski’s 1997 collection of poetry. Selling nearly 40,000 copies its first week marked Bone Palace as one of the highest-selling post-hardcore albums of all time.
After the departure of lead singer Craig Owens and drummer Derrick Frost, the band recruited former Yesterdays Rising vocalist Brandon Bolmer and former Scary Kids Scaring Kids & Underminded drummer Tanner Wayne. They released their third album, Illuminaudio, in late 2010, which saw #5 on the Billboard’s Top Independent Albums. In early 2012, the newcomers decided to leave, allowing Owens and Frost to reassume their previous roles in the band. Later that year, original lead-guitarist Jason Hale left the band, with former The Fall of Troy guitarist Thomas Erak replacing him.
With the closest lineup to the original since Bone Palace Ballet, and freshly signed to Razor & Tie, the band released their fourth studio album, Devil, on April 1, 2014. In late 2014, original bassist Matt Goddard, recently-returned Derrick Frost, and replacement-guitarist Thomas Erak decided to leave the band. As of 2016, the only two founding members who remain, aside from Craig Owens, are Bradley Bell (keyboards, vocals) and Pat McManaman (rhythm guitar).
