About Caroline Smith

Caroline Smith is an American singer-songwriter who boasts a multi-genre body of work, with musical contributions to the worlds of folk, rock, pop, and R&B. The Minnesota native learned guitar at a young age, released a self-titled album, and performed publicly throughout her home state until college, when she formed and headlined indie folk band Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps in 2006. The band enjoyed a good amount of success, finishing seven national tours and releasing three full-length albums.

However, Smith had always felt that she’d been prematurely pigeonholed into the folk-rock genre. So in 2012, she decided to focus more on the music she grew up loving and the sound she said was her true passion: “TLC, Beyoncé and other ’90s R&B — fun, a little bit cheesy, but good R&B.” The result was her rebirth as a solo artist in the form of 2013’s Half About Being A Woman, a feel-good, neo-soul LP that cemented Smith’s sonic transformation while staying true to her guitar-driven roots.

Since the release of Woman, Smith has continued to develop her soulful R&B sound, teaming up with fellow Minnesotan Lizzo in 2014 for “Let ‘Em Say”, which became a viral hit thanks to its debut in an episode of the television comedy Broad City. She announced her sophomore solo album in October 2016 with the release of the promotional single “Trying Not To Love You”.
