Carlos Gardel (1890-1935) was the son of a single laundress. The place of birth has two hypothesis: the first one says that Gardel was born in Tacuarembó, a small city in Uruguay. The other hypothesis says that he was born in Toulouse, France.
Her mother moved to Argentina when he was a little kid to escape the social stigma of having an illegitimate baby. His first hit was “Mi noche triste” in 1917, which launched a career as a tango singer and film actor that earned him fame in Europe and North America as well as South America. He was killed in a plane crash in Colombia in 1935, along with his frequent songwriting partner Alfredo Le Pera and several others. He is known as the greatest singer in tango’s history, as well as one of Rio de la Plata’s tragic heroes.
