Carlos Antonio de Padua Chávez y Ramírez (1899-1978) was a Mexican composer who turned to modernist trends and Aztec themes after the overthrow of his country’s military dictatorship in 1910. Writing in a wide variety of genres and styles, he also founded Mexico’s first permanent orchestra.
