About Buckingham Nicks

Buckingham Nicks was a band comprised of several members, the most notable being both Stevie Nicks & Lindsey Buckingham, who would go on to later success and fame when joining Fleetwood Mac in 1974.

The band initially formed after The Fritz Rabyne Memorial Band (commonly shortened to “Fritz”) broke up in 1971 and was dissolved. However, Nicks and Buckingham would continue to stay together, due to having a simultaneous working and romantic relationship at the time. In light of this, the two would move from San Francisco to Los Angeles, where they would balance a focus on both college-work & music.

During the night, they would record demo tapes on a tape machine that Buckingham kept at his father’s coffee roasting plant. The demos would later be fan-dubbed as “The Coffee Plant Demos.” They then dropped out of college to continue pursuing signage to a record label. The band name came from Stevie & Lindsey combining their two last names, which was described as having a “earthly vibe.” This lead to their eventual signing to Polydor Records, releasing the album on September 5th, 1973.

Promotion for the album was minimal, leading to the record being a commercial failure across the U.S., except in Alabama (Specifically Birmingham), where disc jockeys played the record on Progressive Rock hours on WJLN-FM, giving the band a small cult following in the area. Despite this (and due to the album’s poor sales), the two would spend the rest of the year working for money through means outside of music.

However, shortly after its release, Mick Fleetwood would hear “Frozen Love” playing at the Sound City recording studio, peaking his interest. He would seek out Lindsey, and ask him to join his band. Lindsey stated that he would only join if Stevie Nicks joined with him as a two-piece deal. Fleetwood agreed, and Buckingham Nicks effectively was merged into Fleetwood Mac. Buckingham & Nicks would record demos of songs for a potential second album, but it was never completed.

Buckingham Nicks [Self-Titled] remains the only album in the group’s discography.
