Brownstone is an female R&B trio that came to fame in the mid-90’s. The original members of the group were Nicci Gilbert, Monica “Mimi” Doby, and Charmayne “Maxee” Maxwell.
They released their debut album From The Bottom Up on Michael Jackson’s MJJ Music label. It featured the #1 R&B smash “If You Love Me”.
Before recording their second album Still Climbing, they replaced Monica “Mimi” Doby with Kina Cosper. The second album yielded a solid hit in “5 Miles To Empty”, but the group disbanded before a third album could materialize.
Maxee married one of the group’s longtime producers Soulshock and recorded a number of dance-oriented singles released overseas, but tragically died in 2015 after an accident at home. Kina relaunched herself as an alternative artist, delivering a self-titled album on Dreamworks Records in 2000. Nicci Gilbert recorded a solo album Grown Folks Music for MCA Records in 2002; it was originally shelved, but later released independently.
