About Boom Boom Satellites

Boom Boom Satellites (ブンブンサテライツ, sometimes stylized as BOOM BOOM SATELLITES) were an electronic rock duo originating from Tokyo. They consisted of the members Michiyuki Kawashima (川島道行) and Masayuki Nakano (中野雅之). As they acquainted with each other in college, they formed the electronic duo “Boom Boom Satellites” in 1990, a name based off of another band, “Sigue Sigue Sputnik”. They would sign a record label deal with Sony Music Entertainment Japan and continue creating music up until 2016, the year of Boom Boom Satellites' end.

In late 2013, the duo announced that they were going on tour after the release of their eighth album, Embrace. However, the tour was cancelled when Nakano stated that Kawashima couldn’t play live due to recent symptoms of a supposed brain tumor. This was the first time Kawashima’s disease was revealed to public.

After going through surgery multiple times and getting treatment, Kawashima’s brain tumor relapsed four times. The group created one more EP, Lay Your Hands on Me, before they did a mutual disband due to Kawashima’s illness. The EP released on June 22, 2016. Four months later, Kawashima passed away on October 9th, 2016 due to his tumor. The band’s legacy is filled with their unique sound of combining synths with guitars.
