About Bongo Maffin

Bongo Maffin is a kwaito music group formed in Johannesburg in 1996. The full group roster is Thandiswa Mazwai, Stoan Seate, Speedy, and Jah Seed.

Bongo Maffin’s brand of kwaito incorporates influences from Hip Hop and reggae music. Their debut album, The Concerto, won Best African Pop Album at the South African Music Awards in 1999. Bongolution won Best African Pop and Best Duo/Group at the Metro FM Awards in 2002. Speedy left the group in 2000, and within a few years lead singer Thandiswa Mazwai shifted her focus to other work. She released her first solo album, Zabalaza, in 2005. Meanwhile, Stoan Seate eventually became the presenter of Afro Cafe on SABC 2.

A compilation album, Icon, was released in 2014, but the group did not re-form until Castle Lager hired them to record an advertisement in 2017. Bongo Maffin released a new studio album, Harare, in 2018.
