Black Motion is a dance music duo from Pretoria, South Africa comprised of Bongani Mohosana and Thabo Mabogwane. After enjoying solo careers separately as music producers, Bongani Mohasana (a.k.a. DJ Murda) and Thabo Mabogwane (a.k.a. Smol) who is a percussionist decided to work together in January 2010 as Black Motion.
The duo has released 4 albums to date; their debut Talking Drums was released 2 August 2011, with their sophomore Aquarian Drums released in 2012. Their third effort, Fortune Teller was released in January 2014. Their most recent album, Ya Badimo, was released in 2016.
Black Motion has won several awards since it’s inception. They won their first award at the Mungana Lonene FM Music Awards for
Best Dance/House song for their hit track “Banane Mavoko”. The duo then won the “Best Concert” award at the 2012 African Entertainment Awards (Canada). They went on to win the “Best Dance Album” award at the 2015 SAMAs for Fortune Teller.
Black Motion explained the inspiration behind their name in an interview with idm Mag:
Black Motion; because when we’re on stage and we’re in the zone, while we’re playing, the sound of The Drum takes our minds into a BLACK space, when Murda plays with the knobs on the decks it causes an irresistible movement from deep inside you which is MOTION of the body…BLACK MOTION.
