Bif Naked – real name Beth Torbert – was born in New Dehli, India in 1971 to a young couple of students attending a private school. Soon she was adopted by American missionaries and bought to the US. She grew up in Kentucky but the family eventually relocated to Canada, which is where Bif embarked on her musical career. Today she is strongly associated with the musical scene in Vancouver, British Columbia, which has been her home for many years.
After fronting a few Canadian punk bands, Bif Naked went solo with the release of her self-titled album, Bif Naked in 1995 (some sources say 1994). Because of her numerous tattoos, “Cleopatra” look and unconventional attitudes, Bif was dubbed the “punk princess” by numerous journalists and music reviewers. Those familiar with her sound, though, realize that Bif Naked is pure rock ‘n’ roll.
Bif’s second album, I Bificus was released in 1998 and due to increased airplay, a number of charting songs and an appearance on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Bif became much more widely known throughout North America.
Several more outstanding albums followed until Bif’s career was sidetracked by some serious medical issues. Fortunately she has recovered and her fans are hoping someday soon there will be more music from this amazing, unique performer.
By the way, “Bif” is the nickname she adopted in school, which was simply a mispronunciation of her real first name.
