The awesomely named Barnabe Barnes (1571?-1609) was the third son of a bishop who was able to live off his father’s inheritance. He is best known for the Petrarchan love sonnets that he wrote after coming back from military service in France. A sometime playwright as well, he led a tumultuous personal life, feuding with other poets and being prosecuted in the Star Chamber for the attempted murder of one John Browne, escaping from custody before a verdict could be rendered.
