Barbatuques is a Brazilian music and performance group that was founded in 1995 by a group of friends from São Paulo. The group’s name is a combination of “barba”, which means beard in Portuguese, and “batuques”, which means percussion in Brazilian Portuguese. The name was chosen in honor of their friend Fernando Barba, who was known for his beard and love of percussion.
Barbatuques is known for their unique style of music that combines elements of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, samba, and beatboxing with body percussion. The group produces rhythmic percussion sounds by hitting their own bodies, including their chests, thighs, and cheeks.
