Barack H. Obama was the 44th President of the United States, serving his eight-year term from January 20, 2009 – January 20, 2017.
According to his official biography: “With a father from Kenya, a Harvard educated economist, and a mother from Kansas, a cultural anthropologist for the Ford Foundation, President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. He was raised with help from his grandfather, who served in Patton’s army, and his grandmother, who worked her way up from the secretarial pool to middle management at a bank.”
He served three terms in the Illinois state senate, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004, and mounted a successful run for the U.S. presidency in 2008, becoming the first person of color to hold this office. He was reelected in 2012 against Republican challenger Willard “Mitt” Romney.
