Trained as a lawyer, Ary Barroso (1903-1964) had many careers as a journalist, radio and TV emcee, humor writer, and soccer commentator, but he is best known for his work as a composer and musician. Born to a prominent family in Minas Gerais, Barroso was orphaned at age 7 and started earning money by playing the piano at a movie theater showing silent films. His musical career was extensively involved with Brazil’s theater and film industries, as he wrote many hit songs for artists such as Carmen Miranda and João Gilberto. His score for the 1944 Hollywood movie Brazil was nominated for an Oscar.
