Arid was an alternative rock group from Belgium who gained notoriety as a finalist at the 1996 Humo Rock Rally. Despite not reaching the top 3 in the contest, Arid was signed by Double T Records.
Their debut Little Things Of Venom came out in 1999 and gave the band their first hit “Me And My Melody”. The album was released later that year in the US as At The Close Of Every Day. Arid toured with Suede, K’s Choice and Counting Crows and appeared at several European festivals including Rock Werchter.
In 2002, their sophomore album All Is Quiet Now was released, reaching #3 in Belgium despite having no hit singles. That same year, frontman Jasper Steverlinck released his cover of David Bowie’s “Life On Mars”. It held the #1 spot in Beligum for eight weeks in early 2003 and was later included on his first solo effort Songs Of Innocence. At the end of 2003, Arid released Live.
In 2007, Arid returned with the single “Words”, which almost reached the top 40 in Belgium. Their third album All Things Come In Waves followed in early 2008. It reached #2 and spawned three more modest hits that year as the band toured. Steverlinck participated in Arjen Anthony Lucassen’s side project Guilt Machine in 2009.
Under The Cold Street Lights came out in 2010 and topped the Belgium Albums Chart that March. That same year, a cover of Will Tura’s “Hart Van Goud” reached the top 40. A singles collection followed in 2011. Its last track “Seven Odd Years” reached the top 10 in 2012. Meanwhile, Steverlinck was a judge for two seasons on the Belgian reality show The Voice van Vlaanderen (2011-2013).
In 2018, the band’s official website had last been updated in August 2012 with a news item titled “Thanks To All Of You” – it is now defunct. Steverlinck went solo in the summer of 2012 and has since released another solo effort which includes his 2017 single “Here’s To Love”, a top 10 song in Belgium.
