One of the most celebrated musicians of his time, Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein (1829-1894) was acclaimed as a great concert pianist, as well as an esteemed composer, conductor, and teacher. In 1862, he founded the St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia’s first music school. As a composer, he sought to make distinctively Russian music that would be accessible to Western ears. His output includes five piano concertos, six symphonies, 20 operas, and numerous works for solo piano.
