Anthony “Tony” Perkins and Charmian Carr were American actors and singers, meeting on the set of Stephen Sondheim’s 1966 horror musical Evening Primrose.
Perkins, six years following both his success in 1960’s Psycho and Broadway musical Greenwillow, was a top choice of Sondheim, who were good friends at the time, even rumored to have had a relationship. Playing the main character of Charles Snell, Perkins produced “If You Can Find Me I’m Here” solely for the musical, birthing his singing talent after 6 years.
Carr was fresh off the heels of success following her role in 1965’s Sound of Music alongside Julie Andrews when she was optioned for Evening Primrose. Playing the role of Ella, a trapped maid to the lead of the secret society, she made her TV debut singing “I Remember.”
Perkins and Carr, playing each other’s love interests, were quick to begin working on their three songs together: “Take Me To The World,” its reprise, and “When?” The former of which became the hallmark of the musical, garnering much praise upon the musical’s release on television.
