Astoundingly named for John Dalton, the band’s fingerless and legless bassist – the first survivor of bacterial meningitis in 1989 – the Angry Amputees are a refreshing mix of ‘80s California hardcore, Operation Ivy hooks, and the sultry, danceable power of No Doubt or the Dance Hall Crashers. On this Jack Endino-produced debut, Slut Bomb, much is owed to frontgirl Stacey Dee’s sexy rasp, anthemic punk riffs, and her ability to imbue pop/punk with an old-school, pogo-ready energy that guarantees a fantastic live show. Sure, the heart-wrenching, bubblegum punk of “Want Dead” and “Holding On” is some pretty familiar territory, but the Angry Amputees play it with such fervor that they make it seem fresh. The soft/loud dynamics of “No Mercy” hint at a broader palette for this San Francisco group on future releases, “Psycho Bitch” proves that they can lay down Dead Kennedys-worthy insanity, and “Vanity Fair Blackout” is reminiscent of the Descendents circa Milo Goes to College. Simple stuff, but pretty immediately rewarding. Plus, they stand up for free speech enough to pen a tune called “Dubya.”
