Born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Andy Warhol has been an important icon in the 1960s Pop Art movements. One of his most known portraits, “Eight Elvises,” was resold for $100 million in 2008, making it one of the most valuable paintings in art history.
Warhol was also committed to other activities, such as filmmaking and writing. He died on February 22, 1987, in New York City.
In music, the artist managed and produced for legendary rock band The Velvet Undeground. They met for the first time in a Cafe in December 1965. Andy was impressed by the group’s ability to sing about reality—he would later say about their success;
We all knew something revolutionary was happening. We just felt it. Things couldn’t look this strange and new without some barrier being broken.
