A band that was one of the progenitors of krautrock, it was split from the original commune “Amon Düül”, and was initially founded by core musicians Chris Karrer, John Weinzierl, Peter Leopold and Renate Knaup in 1969.
Its early music style was akin to psychedelic rock but soon progressed to classical-influenced and sometimes lengthy rock suites such as in albums like “Yeti” and “Wolf City”, which became well-received in the United Kingdom and in their homeland, Germany, in the early 1970s.
The group also collaborated with directors such as Rainer-Werner Fassbinder to compose soundtracks for films like “San Domingo” (1970) which won the Deutscher Filmpreis for “Best Cinematography and Best Music”.
Like a lot of music groups, they began to shift to a more mainstream sound, but in the case of Amon Düül II, they disbanded soon after in the early 1980s with little to no revitalized commercial success.
However, in the 1990s, the band has since reformed and occasionally performs live and releases new albums.
