Secretive duo Alpinestars (a name that is incredibly hard to Google) were active from 1995 to 2003, releasing a slew of vinyls before dropping their debut record B.A.S.I.C. in July 2000. This was followed up by White Noise in 2002, featuring Placebo’s Brian Molko on “Carbon Kid,” the second single, and a number of remixes by prominent electronic artists. Molko said of the band:
We really really liked them “Cresta La Wave” was the first we heard of them. So we asked them to do a remix for “Taste In Men” and that was extremely successful… As luck would have it we ended up being neighbours for a while in the studio complex.
“Carbon Kid” was a minor chart success in the UK, reaching number 63. The band has cycled through a number of labels, with Faith and Hope, Guidance Recordings, Riverman Records and Astralwerks all contributing releases and distribution.
Richard Woolgar sat down with Designer Magazine to speak about White Noise:
We get very bored, very quickly I suppose that the whole idea of doing the album the way we did it, is that we came to a corner and thought that’s enough of that. We needed to keep an element of what we did, but at the same time bring a whole new thing to it which was other musicians and live instruments.
There was allegedly a third album written and recorded, but that has yet to surface.
