About Alma Cogan

Alma Cogan was an English singer of the 1950s and early 1960s. She was dubbed “The Girl with the Giggle in her voice”. She was born on 19 May 1932 in Whitechapel, East London of Russian-Romanian Jewish descent. She came to prominence in 1953 when she became vocalist for the BBC Radio comedy programme Take It From Here. Many of her recordings were covers of U.S. hits. She had many hits in the 1950s reaching number one in 1955 with Dreamboat. She was famous for wearing polka dot dresses. She died of ovarian cancer in October 1966 aged only 34.
