Alfredo Romero Fernández (Cádiz, Andalucía; November 19, 1980), better known as Alfred Romero, is a Spanish singer, vocalist of the symphonic power metal/neoclassical metal band Dark Moor.
Beginning
He started his interest in music playing the drums, and time after the guitar. So, he spent most of his time trying to improve as a guitarist, but his close friends incited him to sing, telling him that this was his vocation.
At the age of 20 he takes his first steps as a singer, with the influences of characters such as Joey Tempest, Roy Khan or Freddie Mercury and admiring legendary groups such as Iron Maiden, Europe, Whitesnake or Metallica.
In 2000 he formed part of the band Scheherezade, recording only a demo.
Dark Moor
It’s up to 2003, when his career takes a serious turn, Dark Moor offers auditions for a new vocalist, that’s where Alfred presents himself as a little dubious, but these, listening to him, were impressed by his vocal capacity, which was able to fulfill the demand for the then new eponymous album Dark Moor, which was originally designed for former female vocalist Elisa C. Martín, thus becoming the new voice of a band with renown on the European power metal scene.
Later, they managed to enter an international tour covering Spain, Belgium and France together with After Forever, Nightmare and Amaran. Specifically, the 16th of January 2004, in Brussels, is the day on which Alfred demonstrates for the first time his vocal skills live. With the positive response from the public, After Forever invites you to perform a couple of songs with them during the tour.
In 2005 he recorded Beyond The Sea, which supposed the consolidation of the band’s renewed sound, freeing himself from the task of singing some themes that were not thought for him (as happened on his previous album). Pleasing your audience with clean highs or dark strays.
At the beginning of 2007, they released their sixth studio album, entitled Tarot. With a notable musical evolution, and a very versatile Alfred, capable of reaching a wide range of tones, from the lowest to the highest. Signed contract with the Italian label Scarlet Records, and the Japanese label Avalon Marquee. This situation led them to tour South America, visiting Chile, Peru, and Brazil, placing themselves as the first Spanish metal band to play in Brazilian lands.
After two years of expectation, in March 2009, Dark Moor presents Autumnal. A more neo-classic album, for its symphonic cuts and some gothic passages. Alfred’s personality as a performer is appreciated much more, improving his level of English with a natural register of medium tones, switching from the highs of always, to more serious notes than he was used to. With this album, they played throughout Europe and achieved some of their most ambitious goals, playing in Russia and the Czech Republic.
Ancestral Romance released in November 2010, this album is completely dedicated to your country, Spain. It contains homages to the Cantar de Mio Cid, the lovers of Turuel, Don Quixote, Life is a Dream by Calderòn de la Barca, etc. Concretely, the theme of Gadir is a tribute to the tacita de plata, Cádiz, where Alfred Romero was born and raised. In addition, contain a version of the poem by José de Espronceda La Canción Del Pirata (previously musicalized by Lancelot and years later by Tierra Santa) It is the first cut of Dark Moor, completely in Spanish. Here, Alfred handles a baritone voice, as he said in an interview hecha for Rafabasa.com: “In low tesituras I can allow myself the luxury of interpreting much more, of believing that I am the personage on which I am singing and of giving it more emphasis and color to the songs, which is what I really like”.
On June 18, 2013, they present their last work Ars Musica. Without a doubt, the most experimental album of his entire career, leaving power metal to involve his audience in hard rock melodies and nine orchestral arrangements. Alfred becomes very diverse and interesting, he demonstrates a fantastic range, singing from the opera to the high pitch heavy. As in El Último Rey, which is, by the way, the first composition in Spanish in the history of Dark Moor, and is written between Francisco José García and him. They received very positive reviews regarding the change of musical genre, especially with the evolution of Alfred, who is considered one of the best singers on the stage.
In Japan, they are placed in the 5th position of best-selling albums in the hard rock/heavy metal category, just behind Black Sabbath, Megadeth, Van Halen and Whitesnake. In addition, the disc is among the most purchased on Amazon being the #1 in Spain and France, and #4 in the United Kingdom.
To promote its launch, Dark Moor confirms a tour in Mexico for the first time. Later on, a mini tour of Asia is confirmed, taking them to Taiwan, Japan, China and South Korea, becoming the first national metal band to visit China.
In 2018, Dark Moor announced and presented several themes from the album Origins, released on December 7, 2018, and which would give a tour towards Anglo-Saxon cultures, Celtic literature and musical reminiscence like the Scottish tradition, with songs like the “Raggle Taggle Gypsy”, and the “Iseult”, about the legend of Tristán and Isolda.
