Born to a musical family in Fortaleza, Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920) was a composer and conductor who trained in Europe and was known to the likes of Mahler and Debussy. In Brazil, he advocated for the use of the Portuguese language in art song and opera against those who thought only Italian was proper. He was also an activist for pro-democracy and anti-slavery causes.
