Albert Ketèlbey (1875-1959) studied at Trinity College of Music but declined a classical career in favor of becoming music director of London’s Vaudeville Theatre and composing light orchestral music, frequently characterized by chintzy faux-Eastern exoticism. The success of his early works made him Britain’s first millionaire composer, but his music declined in popularity and quality after World War II. Since his death, his reputation has been rehabilitated.
