Alan Hovhaness (1911-2000) was an incredibly prolific American composer. His Armenian family suffered discrimination due to their ethnicity, but Hovhaness said he simply changed his name so that people would no longer mispronounce it, taking the name of his paternal grandfather. His more than 500 surviving musical works include 67 numbered symphonies and bear the influences of Armenian music, jazz, and Asian folk music.
