Agnetha Åse Fältskog is a Swedish singer-songwriter and pianist.
Known as one of the most distinct members of the Swedish pop group ‘ABBA’, Fältskog first claimed to fame in November 1967 with her first single (Jag var så kär) and eponymous debut album. Fältskog became popular in her own home country, due to her success in the Swedish record charts, in the late 1960s, leading to several appearances on Swedish television special programmes, and making several albums.
In 1970, Fältskog met Björn Ulvaeus, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson, to form a prototype version of ABBA, under the name ‘Festfolket’. The following year, Ulvaeus and Fältskog both married, and had two children (Linda and Christian). The marriage lasted until 1979, when they divorced due to personal and creative differences.
As a member of ABBA, Fältskog assumed lead vocals along with Lyngstad and sang most of the songs, including “The Winner Takes It All”, “Gimme Gimme Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)”, “Dancing Queen”, “Take a Chance on Me”, “Thank You for the Music”, “Chiquitita”, and “S. O. S.”. Fältskog contributed to only one song “Disillusion”, from ABBA’s debut album, “Ring Ring”, as a composer while Ulvaeus wrote the lyrics to “Disillusion”, not counting the several unreleased songs.
During the peak of ABBA after winning the Eurovision Song Contest of 1974 as one of the members of the group, Fältskog recorded her album ‘Elva kvinnor i ett hus’ in 1975, which includes the Swedish version of “S. O. S.”. The Swedish version reached No. 4 on the Swedish singles chart Topplistan in January 1976.
After ABBA informally broke up in 1983, Fältskog would prosper moderate success and positive reception from the European audience, and the American audience in a small scale, in her post-ABBA solo career, especially her English-language albums “Wrap Your Arms Around Me”, “Eyes of a Woman”, and “I Stand Alone”. Fältskog withdrew from publicity and music business after “I Stand Alone”, but released her autobiography memoir “Som jag är” in 1998 and carried out compilation albums during her hiatus.
Fältskog made her first music comeback in 2004 with “My Coloring Book”, selling over 500,000 copies. Nearly ten years later, she recorded her album “A” with producers Jörgen Elofsson and Peter Nordahl with mixed to positive receptions, selling 1 million copies. Since the release of “A”, she has endured international and domestic publicity.
