Adam LaClave (pr. “Lə-CLAHV”) is a Nashville, TN singer, producer, and podcaster. He first came into public view in the contemporary Christian band Earthsuit. The experimental techno-rock group released only one album, 2000’s Kaleidoscope Superior, before dissolving. His co-frontman Paul Meany went on to form Mutemath, on whose songs LaClave has shared a handful of writing credits. He and Meany remain good friends.
After Earthsuit, LaClave formed the short-lived rock band Macrosick and the alt-R&B project Club of the Sons (a name taken from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis), which released one LP, 2009’s Young Quanta. For several years, he worked under the name Charlie Blacksmoke, releasing a few singles. In 2018, LaClave began producing a podcast titled Mystic Picnic, teasing future releases from Club of the Sons.
In the inaugural episode of his new podcast, LaClave stated that he has stopped chasing the “MTV dream” of success in the music industry:
I have… repositioned my relationship with music and creating music away from the original MTV dream of being on stage 365 days a year and cranking out records and being on a major label. I’ve repositioned my perspective on music and my role in putting music into the world… I’ve taken little stabs over the past decade at creating projects that would get major-label attention, and I’ve had at least one of those that got that attention, but I’m at the place now in 2018 where I just don’t care. I’m not looking to release music for a living. I’m looking to release music because it’s just a part of me. It’s running through me. It’s something that I dream about; it’s something that I hear. I can’t shut if off.
He has been married to his husband Zach Vannieuwenhuyze-LaClave since 2016.
