03 Greedo is a rising artist out of Watts, California. It’s hard to pin Greedo to one genre, since he can effortlessly switch from gangsta rap soliloquies to Phil Collins-esque auto-tuned ballads. He also produced much of his early material, making him a jack of all trades. He partially attributes his unique voice to his partial deafness that resulted from a series of bad ear infections and a cochlear implant.
His name derives from the 103rd St. Jordan Downs housing projects where his Grape Street Watts Crips Gang claims territory.
“Naw, I been was ‘03’ in jail. I been ‘Greedo.’ See, if your name end with a -y in the hood, they change it to an -o. So my name was ‘Greedy,’ but everybody trying to be ‘Greedy.’ I wanted a new name anyway. So I’mma just call myself what the hood call me–and that’s where the ‘03’ come from. ‘03’ is some gangbanging shit,” he admits. “If I put ‘103’ it’s gon’ make it hard for me to work. I just took the ‘1’ off and made my adlib ‘It’s only one…oh-three.’ That’s 103rd. I’m Greedo from Grape, so 03 Greedo.’” – 03 Greedo via The Fader
Greedo started to find increasing amounts of fame through the year 2018, with his song “Never Bend” he had already achieved a level of rising artist status but he hadn’t progressed this into much. That was until he released his project, The Wolf of Grape Street, which was swept under the radar around the time of its release, but the project would later prove to be a good staple to what he’d go on to do.
About a near week after he released his project, Greedo was involved in some controversy because of his comments on 2Pac, saying that 2Pac was “a bitch ass nigga”.
About a week after the 2Pac comments were made, he sorted out these comments on Genius. Greedo said this about the 2Pac comments in an interview with Rob Markman:
Near the end of April, 2018, Greedo revealed that he could be facing up to 20 years in prison because Greedo and his friend were pulled over near Amarillo, Texas, and were discovered to be riding with four pounds of methamphetamine and two stolen pistols. XXL spoke on the 20 year sentence saying that despite his hustle and rise to fame, his career will be put on hold.
Greedo said that due to the 20 year sentence he was going to go all-out on his music before he left for prison. He spoke with the LA Leakers that he would have 30 albums done while doing 15 songs a day before his sentence took effect and also posted on his instagram confirming this. Around this time he started teasing projects and songs with artists Yung Bans, Lil Uzi Vert, Bino Rideaux, and more.
On June 26th, 2018, a few days before returning to prison, Greedo released his follow-up album to The Wolf of Grape Street, God Level. The project featured underground artists like Key!, Yung Mal, and Runway Richy, as well as mainstream artists like Rich the Kid and Lil Uzi Vert.
