The second single from 1997’s The Colour and the Shape. “Everlong” was penned by Dave Grohl during his split with his first wife, photographer Jennifer Youngblood.
The divorce left him alone, and essentially homeless since she kicked him out of the house. To add insult to injury, the Foo Fighters w...
[Verse 1]
Hello, I've waited here for you
Everlong
Tonight, I throw myself into
And out of the red, out of her head, she sang
[Verse 2]
Come down, and waste away with me
Down with me
Slow, how you wanted it to be
I'm over my head, out of her head, she sang
[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
[Verse 3]
Breathe out, so I can breathe you in
Hold you in
And now, I know you've always been
Out of your head, out of my head, I sang
[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder
When I sing along with you
[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when
She sang
[Instrumental Break]
[Pre-Chorus]
And I wonder
[Chorus]
If everything could ever feel this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You gotta promise not to stop when I say when

Dave Grohl, Kerrang! interview, June 2006:

Foo Fighters’ debut TV performance was on David Letterman’s show in 1995, and they would return as musical guests numerous times over the years, including a performance of “Everlong” in 1997.
When Letterman was recovering from heart surgery in 2000, listening to “Everlong” helped him get through it...
The song was written about Louise Post of Veruca Salt, whom Dave Grohl was seeing at the time. On this song you can hear her backing vocals, which she recorded via telephone from Chicago.
Post also appeared on the Grohl-composed soundtrack for the film Touch, providing lead vocals for the title tra...
